One of the biggest issues I see with clients on their way to becoming Engaging Executives is an extreme focus on the words they’re saying, but not on how they’re saying them. While your words are obviously important, you have to look beyond your verbal communication in order to communicate effectively as a whole. Your tone of voice, your body language, it’s all equally important.

There’s a great phrase that addresses just this —“you can’t not communicate”. Think about that for a second…“You can’t not communicate”. What does it mean?

Every single thing you do is a communication.

If I just raise my eyebrows slightly, that’s communicating something. If I squint just a tiny bit, that’s also communicating something. If I was to completely sit still, catatonic, that would even be communicating something.

So focus on your entire communication. When you’re speaking with someone, pay attention to what your body’s doing, because sometimes your body language speaks louder than your words.
