“Social confidence isn’t a personality trait. It’s a skill you can develop.”
Let’s face it: Approaching new people can feel intimidating, especially in professional settings. But here’s the good news: social confidence isn’t about being naturally outgoing. It’s about building momentum through small, deliberate actions.
One of the most powerful ways to break the ice is to create your own social momentum. The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
Three Practical Exercises to Build Social Momentum
1. Create Your Uplifting Personal Soundtrack
• Dig through your music collection or find three to five songs that get you in a social mood.
• Save them as a playlist on your phone.
• Listen to them before heading into any social setting to boost your energy and confidence.
2. Set Up a Happy Button
• Think of a time you felt truly happy and confident in a social setting.
• Anchor that feeling by pressing a specific spot on your hand or wrist.
• Practise this twice a day for a week, and use it whenever you need a quick confidence boost.
3. Chat to Three New People Daily
• Start with small interactions: greet someone in the coffee queue, ask a colleague how their day is going, or comment on the weather to a stranger.
• Smile with your eyes to project playfulness and approachability.
• Do this five days a week until talking to strangers becomes second nature.
One technical leader shared: “I used to dread networking events. But after practising these exercises, I found myself enjoying the process of meeting new people.”
