Great leaders don’t just see situations: they see them from every angle. The “Position Three” exercise from my book “ENGAGE: A practical guide to understanding, influencing and connecting” is a powerful way to gain objectivity and improve your decision-making.
Here’s how it works:
1. Replay the Situation: Think of a recent challenging interaction.
2. Step into Position Three: Imagine you’re a coach observing the interaction between two strangers. Stay 100% objective, don’t take sides.
3. Coach Position One: What advice would you give to Position One (yourself) to handle the situation better?
4. Take Action: Use your own advice to repair or improve the situation.
Pro Tip
Practise this with past events before using it in live situations. With time, you’ll be able to apply it on the fly.
One leader shared, “Position Three gave me the clarity I needed to navigate a difficult conversation with my team. It’s now my go-to tool for conflict resolution.”
