Many STEM professionals believe that leadership is a personality trait. You either have it, or you don’t.
But in reality, leadership is a set of behaviours that anyone can practise. The most effective leaders I have coached were not “naturals.” They were curious, disciplined and willing to change how they showed up.
Here are three behaviours that make the difference:
1) Listening before leading: strong leaders make people feel heard before they ask for action.
2)Adapting communication: they know how to speak to executives, peers and technical teams differently.
3) Sharing the stage: they create opportunities for others to grow rather than keeping the spotlight.
These behaviours are not gifts. They are skills. And like any skill in STEM, they improve with practice.
The myth of the “natural leader” holds many people back. The truth is that leadership is open to anyone who chooses to invest in it.
Tolerance is about building connection. By matching others’ energy and creating rapport, you can strengthen relationships and communicate more effectively. Explore more to learn how.
