“The gift of a great coach is to challenge thinking and guide others to their own realisations.”
Coaching is one of the most powerful tools a leader can use to help others grow. But true coaching isn’t about teaching or telling. It’s about asking the right questions to spark insight and self-discovery.
This non-directive style of coaching allows individuals to break out of their “problem box” and find solutions on their own. It’s not about giving answers. It’s about guiding others to see possibilities they couldn’t see before.
The GROW Model: A Simple Framework for Coaching
The GROW model, created by Sir John Whitmore, is a powerful tool for structuring coaching conversations. It consists of four intuitive stages:
G = Goal: Clarify what the coachee wants to achieve.
R = Reality: Explore the current situation and challenges.
O = Options: Brainstorm potential solutions and strategies.
W = Way Forward: Define the next steps and commit to action.
Why Coaching Works
Coaching creates autonomy, not dependency. It empowers individuals to think critically, take ownership, and grow into their potential.
One leader shared: “When I started using the GROW model, I saw my team become more confident and proactive. They didn’t just rely on me. They started solving problems on their own.”
