There’s no escaping it: AI is transforming the workplace faster than most of us imagined.
Analysts predict that AI will automate many junior and technical tasks. That means the traditional apprenticeship pathway, where you slowly climb the ladder by proving yourself technically, is breaking down.
For IT managers, this creates both risk and opportunity.
The risk
If your reputation is built solely on technical expertise, AI will compress your advantage. Tasks you once mastered may now be handled by automation.
The opportunity: What AI cannot replicate is judgment, empathy, influence, and trust. In other words, the very things that define leadership.
A recent Deloitte report warned that the “AI elephant in the boardroom” is here, and that executives must double down on distinctly human skills to stay relevant.
That resonates with what I see every day. The IT managers who move up are not necessarily the smartest coders or analysts. They are the ones who:
1) Communicate clearly across functions
2) Guide teams through ambiguity
3) Build trust up, down, and sideways
4) Show presence that reassures others during change
AI is not taking leadership away. It is making it more human than ever.
The technical ceiling is real but the ceiling is shifting. Now, the differentiator is how you engage people, not how fast you solve problems.
Many overseas professionals discover that technical expertise alone isn’t enough to progress their careers. Building relationships, confidence, and influence in the workplace can be just as important. Discover how introverts and technical professionals can unlock their full leadership potential.
